Steve: Whatever your intent, a twitter stream that contains a link in every tweet demonstrates that your aren't conversing with anyone; you're just reporting on the existence of information. That looks like a News Feed.

If I'm interested in your news, I may value your news feed and keep coming back for it. If I'm not interested in your feed, I doubt you'll get me interested by including links in every tweet.

To get me interested, you may have to mention me in a tweet... Say, "Hello, you tweet a lot about X which is very important to me. I look forward to sharing some thoughts with you." Or, "I wanted to let you know that your last tweet and blog post about Y encouraged me to try Z."

My point is: not every thought or communication is an invitation to read or review something else--at least it isn't in a SOCIAL environment. Can you imagine a cocktail party where every participant, to make a point, pulled out a reference book, waved it in your face, and said "Read this?"

A second problem: If all the links you tweet say "look at me," your social presence is very one-sided. What about "look at what those guys did?" What about "are you doing anything interesting?" What about "Did anyone get to attend the firemen's carnival yesterday?" Again: one-sided is OK if you have a bunch of followers who really want to be in your PR loop. It's a miserably ineffective way to connect with new followers.

I'm pretty confident, when I see a Twitter stream with a link in every tweet, I'm not going to have a social relationship with the tweeter. This forces me to decide: Does the content of this news stream interest me enough that I want to clutter my Twitter stream with it? If I already love you, I'll follow; if I don't already know you, I probably never will.

I try to provide links in every one of my Tweets. Sometimes it's to a news release on our web site, media coverage of SEDA-COG or one of our clients, or to an article from one of our programs' newsletters. As I see it, the Tweet is intended to attract the reader's interest; the link provides the information that the reader is now interested in. Thoughts?

I agree with you. Using the old advertising paradigm; push to market, doesn't work anymore. When you post to Twitter, the post should be informative and useful. Now and then you can post blatant advertising. Here's more information on using Twitter for business; http://socialmediablogs.net/2009/04/twitterbusiness.html
